At the top of your maintenance checklist should be the acid-alkaline balance, or pH. To prevent algae problems, keep your spas pH between 7.5 and 7.6. Use a test kit to test pH, and adjust the pH by adding the proper chemicals. Dip strips are available for easy water testing. Bring a spa water sample in a clean container to The Pool Doctor Store for a professional test when you can. We will instruct you on how and when to add chemicals to your spa or when to drain and refill the spa if needed or check further on the web page. It's full of information.
FACT: Two people soaking for 60 minutes will lose 1 quart of perspiration. Shock your spa after every use. This will remove all contaminates.

Fill with fresh water-Normal Maintenance. Drain and refill your spa or hot tub every 3 to 4 months. Clean the sides and bottom and apply an acrylic sealer to the shell when the weather is above 65 degrees. Do this one time a year. Operate the pump and filter a minimum of 6-8 hours daily and clean the filter every 2-4 weeks depending on water clarity. Add 1 cap of Stain & Scale Control weekly. Use a rigid child safe spa cover and make sure it is securely fastened on all spas or hot tubs. A floating spa cover under the rigid cover will extend the life of the rigid cover for years.
SPAS:
Feel water temperature before going into the water.
Always test water before entering
Test GFCI circuit breaker monthly
Set filter cycle or timer to run two 4-hour cycles per 24 hours
Use a thermal spa cover to save chemicals and electrical costs
Water is amazing. It can cure you or make you sick. It can give you life or without it, we die. The best part of water is seeing a perfectly crystal clear spa. Ahhh. Sparkling and inviting, the hot water will soothe your body, relax your mind and make arthritis symptoms diminish or disappear. We can enjoy our spas summer or winter with relatively little effort!
How do we keep that water crystal clear? It's not magic. Just filtration and chemistry. It's important to have the water balanced to prevent equipment failure and keep the bather safe &comfortable. I have seen brand new heater elements fail within one month due to a high acidity reading. So basic is the chemistry system, even a child could do it. You just need the time many of us find hard to come up with. Trust me. I meet people all the time whose problems occur from lack of time to check things over. If left alone with no preventative measures taken, things can snowball into an unhealthy condition rather quickly especially with warm water. If your water gets cloudy, immediately test and adjust chemistry and with proper filtration it should clear in 2 or 3 days. If you don't have the time because of work schedules or you are going out of town, call us. We offer weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or one-time service, a drain and clean service and an interior polishing service.
BASIC WATER TESTS & THEIR PURPOSE
SANITIZER: Chlorine or Bromine. It keeps the water healthy, safe, clear and algae free.
PH: The part of the water that maintains either alkaline or acidic properties.
TOTAL ALKALINITY: This balanced stabilizes the Ph from dramatic changes.
CALCIUM HARDNESS: Keeps water feeling soft and reduces interior deterioration.
CYANURIC ACID: Water stabilizer helps prevent chlorine breakdown from the sun.
IRON & COPPER: Minerals found in pool water can stain and cause other problems.
Water chemistry can be a bit more involved when dealing with complicated isolated experiences or unknowns. This is where our experience helps you.
